Description
This is a piece I did for my Art Foundation course. It's about how the traditional British high street is being increasingly weakened and killed off by internet equivalents.
I wanted to create a clear contrast between the two streets, with each shop being mirrored by it's main online competitor. For example, Blockbusters main competitor is a combination of online streaming from services such as LoveFilm and Netfix, I thought Netflix was the most recognizable for that and chose that to become the physical store competing. You may notice that the Apple building featured is iTunes rather than a real world Apple shop, this is because I wanted to reinforce the fact that these are internet shops being represented as physical buildings.
I took a few artistic liberties here, most noticeable is the fact that the two doors on the centre building would not be plausible - but given that I wanted to show something here, I opted to have a clear duality rather than stick rigidly to realism.
The other one is the lack of any lamp-posts on the street, I decided not to have them as they cluttered up the shop fronts. The street is more of a vehicle for the message, so the main priority were that things were very clear and could be read immediately. If I focused too much on creating a realistic street I could risk it JUST looking like a realistic street, and missing the point of the piece. This way it's immediately apparent to the viewer what the piece is saying. Hopefully, anyway.
There's still more I could add to this but I got a bit sick of seeing it and this was only a short project with another beginning today, so this is probably the most 'finished' it will be.
Some of you may also notice this is very similar to a sketch posted a couple of months ago. That was actually half of the inspiration for this piece, and served as the basis for the layout: [link] (top sketch)
